Nine Demons (1984), also released as The Demons, The Nine Venoms, Nine Venoms, and Nine Deadly Venoms, was originally released as 九子天魔 (Jiǔ Zǐ Tiān Mó / Gau Ji Tin Mo). Directed by legendary filmmaker Chang Cheh, this unusual Hong Kong martial arts fantasy stars Ricky Cheng Tien-Chi, Lu Feng, Chiang Sheng, Lee Chung-Yat, Yu Tai-Ping, and Chris Lee Kin-Sang. Combining traditional kung fu with Taoist-inspired supernatural horror, demonic forces, elaborate fantasy effects, and the distinctive talents of several Venom Mob performers, the film remains one of Chang Cheh's strangest and most unusual later martial arts productions. Available from ClassicKungFuMovies.com for collectors who value accurate film details and hard-to-find physical media.
STORY OVERVIEW
Joey and Gary are the surviving sons of two powerful families whose estates are targeted by a ruthless conspiracy. After their fathers are murdered and Gary is captured, Joey escapes into the wilderness only to fall into a mysterious underworld where he encounters the terrifying Black Prince of Hell.
Desperate to save his friend and avenge the destruction of their families, Joey makes a dangerous bargain and receives the power to command nine demons. The supernatural creatures give him extraordinary abilities, but they demand blood in return. As Joey's quest for revenge grows increasingly violent, the line between using the demons and becoming controlled by them becomes more difficult to escape without revealing the film's conclusion.
MARTIAL ARTS HIGHLIGHTS
Nine Demons combines Chang Cheh's familiar kung fu action with an unusually heavy dose of supernatural fantasy. The film features traditional hand-to-hand combat, acrobatic fighting, unusual weapons, elaborate stunt work, and bizarre encounters involving the nine demons. Performers including Lu Feng and Chiang Sheng bring the athleticism associated with the Venom Mob to a story filled with dark magic, flying demon skulls, and imaginative fantasy combat.
WHY COLLECTORS PICK IT
Nine Demons has developed a cult following among collectors because few films from the era combine martial arts and supernatural horror in quite this way. Ricky Cheng Tien-Chi leads the unusual adventure, while Lu Feng and Chiang Sheng provide familiar faces for Venom Mob fans. Its strange mythology, eccentric visual effects, unusual fight sequences, and unmistakable Chang Cheh style make it a fascinating title for collectors looking beyond conventional kung fu films.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE
Released in 1984, Nine Demons came late in Chang Cheh's prolific career and reflects the increasing popularity of supernatural fantasy in Hong Kong cinema. Although often associated with the Venom Mob because of its cast and martial arts style, the film was produced by Chang He Film Company rather than Shaw Brothers Studio. Its unusual mixture of kung fu, horror, fantasy, and demonic mythology makes it one of the more distinctive cult martial arts films of the 1980s.
