Killer Constable (1980), Also Known As: Lightning Kung Fu · Karate Exterminators · 萬人斬 · 万人斩 · Wan Ren Zhan — Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Kuei Chih Hung for Shaw Brothers Studio, this gritty martial arts thriller stars Chen Kuan Tai, Danny Lee, Lau Wing, Ku Feng, Wang Chung, and Lily Li. Combining ruthless swordplay, political intrigue, relentless pursuit, and dark storytelling, the film remains one of the most powerful late-era Shaw Brothers productions. Available from ClassicKungFuMovies.com for collectors who value accurate film details and hard-to-find physical media.

The Story

After a fortune in imperial gold is stolen from the Empress Dowager, the government's most feared constable is given an impossible assignment—recover the treasure within one month or face execution himself. With time running out, he launches a relentless pursuit across the martial world, leaving a trail of violence in his wake.

As the investigation uncovers hidden conspiracies, ruthless killers, and shifting loyalties, every encounter pushes the relentless lawman closer to the truth. The deeper he ventures into the conspiracy, the more justice gives way to vengeance in a brutal struggle where few survive.

The Martial Arts

Killer Constable delivers some of the hardest-hitting sword combat produced by Shaw Brothers Studio. Rather than emphasizing graceful wuxia fantasy, director Kuei Chih Hung fills the film with savage duels, bloody ambushes, relentless chases, and fierce one-on-one confrontations. Chen Kuan Tai commands the screen as the uncompromising imperial constable, whose relentless pursuit of justice drives every explosive action sequence. The film's realistic violence and relentless pacing make it one of the darkest martial arts productions of its era.

Why Collectors Pick It

Collectors regard Killer Constable as one of Kuei Chih Hung's finest martial arts films thanks to its uncompromising tone, brutal action, and morally complex storytelling. Chen Kuan Tai delivers one of his strongest performances as a relentless government enforcer whose pursuit of justice slowly blurs into obsession. Its bleak atmosphere, violent swordplay, and mature themes make it an essential Shaw Brothers title for fans seeking the studio's grittier side.

Historical Significance

Released in 1980, Killer Constable demonstrated Kuei Chih Hung's ability to reinvent traditional martial arts storytelling by replacing idealized heroes with flawed, relentless characters driven by duty and revenge. The film's darker tone, realistic violence, and psychological depth helped distinguish it from many contemporary wuxia productions and secured its reputation as one of the strongest late-era Shaw Brothers martial arts films.
