Golden Swallow (1968) Also Known As: The Golden Swallow · Jin Yan Zi · 金燕子 · The Girl with the Thunderbolt Kick is a Shaw Brothers wuxia film directed by Chang Cheh and starring Cheng Pei-pei, Jimmy Wang Yu and Lo Lieh. The film returns to the swordswoman introduced in Come Drink with Me, placing her at the center of a deadly conflict between rival fighters.

The Story

Golden Swallow hopes to leave her dangerous past behind, but a series of murders brings her name back into the martial world. A mysterious swordsman known as Silver Roc kills his enemies and deliberately leaves clues pointing to her as the culprit.

Determined to clear her name, Golden Swallow is drawn into a rivalry involving Silver Roc and the honorable swordsman Han Tao. Their conflicting loyalties and feelings turn a search for the truth into a struggle with deadly consequences.

The Martial Arts

Golden Swallow is built around sword duels and the dramatic movement of classic wuxia cinema. Cheng Pei-pei brings poise to the title role, while Jimmy Wang Yu's Silver Roc gives the action a more ruthless edge. Chang Cheh's staging makes the personal rivalry inseparable from the violence of the fights.

Why Collectors Pick It

For Shaw Brothers collectors, Golden Swallow connects two important chapters of Hong Kong swordplay cinema: Cheng Pei-pei's character from Come Drink with Me and Chang Cheh's harder-edged approach to wuxia. The presence of Jimmy Wang Yu and Lo Lieh makes the cast especially notable.

Historical Significance

Released in 1968, Golden Swallow followed King Hu's Come Drink with Me while taking the returning heroine in a different dramatic direction. It reflects the late-1960s shift in Shaw Brothers swordplay films toward more violent confrontations and conflicted male warriors, even as Cheng Pei-pei remains central to the story.
