Bloody Parrot (1981) Also Known As: Xie Ying Wu · 血鸚鵡 · 血鹦鹉. Directed by Hua Shan for Shaw Brothers, this unusual wuxia mystery stars Jason Pai Piao and Tony Liu. Based on a story by Gu Long, with a screenplay by Ni Kuang, it blends swordplay, supernatural horror, and an investigation into stolen imperial treasure. It is a distinctive choice for collectors of 1980s Shaw Brothers martial arts DVDs.
The Story
Master swordsman Yeh Ting-feng becomes caught up in a mystery surrounding the theft of valuable treasures intended for the Emperor. Although he is suspected of involvement, Yeh has nothing to do with the crime and sets out to uncover the truth for himself.
His investigation leads him toward the mysterious Bloody Parrot, a supernatural figure surrounded by frightening legends. Along the way, Yeh encounters the determined constable Tieh Han and a collection of dangerous and suspicious characters, as the stolen treasure, unexplained deaths, and strange happenings gradually reveal a much larger conspiracy.
The Martial Arts
Bloody Parrot mixes traditional Shaw Brothers swordplay with mystery, horror, and supernatural action. The film features sword duels, martial arts confrontations, assassins, unusual weapons, traps, and fights staged around elaborate period sets. Rather than following a straightforward revenge story, the action is woven into a mystery involving the missing imperial treasure and the strange legend of the Bloody Parrot.
The film's unusual combination of wuxia and supernatural storytelling gives its martial arts sequences a darker atmosphere than many of the more traditional Shaw Brothers swordplay productions from the same period.
Why Collectors Pick It
Collectors seek Bloody Parrot for its combination of Shaw Brothers production, Gu Long's distinctive storytelling, and an unusual mixture of swordplay, mystery, horror, and fantasy. Jason Pai Piao leads the cast as Yeh Ting-feng, while Tony Liu plays the determined constable Tieh Han as the two become connected by the investigation.
For collectors of Shaw Brothers Movies, Gu Long adaptations, and darker wuxia productions, Bloody Parrot is an interesting title from the studio's prolific early-1980s period.
Historical Significance
Released in 1981, Bloody Parrot was part of the extensive run of Shaw Brothers martial arts productions that brought the works of Gu Long to the screen. The film stands apart from more conventional wuxia adventures by combining Gu Long's mystery-driven story with supernatural horror and Shaw Brothers swordplay.
The film remains part of the Shaw Brothers catalog and is recognized as one of the studio's distinctive fantasy-horror wuxia productions from the early 1980s.
