Ten Tigers from Kwangtung (1979), Also Known As: Ten Tigers of Kwangtung · Ten Tigers from Kuangtung · 廣東十虎與後五虎, is a Shaw Brothers kung fu movie directed by Chang Cheh. Starring Ti Lung, Alexander Fu Sheng, Philip Kwok, Lo Meng, and Lu Feng, this sprawling martial arts tale follows the legendary Canton Ten Tigers and the deadly revenge pursued against their successors.
The Story
Two assassins begin hunting the students and descendants of the celebrated Ten Tigers of Kwangtung. As the survivors try to understand the killings, the story turns back to the earlier generation and the events that gave rise to the Tigers' reputation.
Years before, Li Jen Chiao (Ti Lung) shelters an anti-Qing revolutionary pursued by a Manchu general. With the help of his fiery companion Tan Ming (Alexander Fu Sheng) and other skilled fighters, he gathers a group of martial artists willing to risk their lives for the fugitive. Their struggle sets off a feud whose consequences reach the next generation.
The Martial Arts
Chang Cheh assembles a remarkable group of Shaw Brothers fighters for hand-to-hand kung fu, coordinated group battles, kicks, and traditional weapons combat. Fu Sheng, Ti Lung, and the Venom Mob performers bring contrasting fighting styles to a film that moves between the original masters and their disciples.
Why Collectors Pick It
For fans seeking Shaw Brothers kung fu movies on DVD, Venom Mob films, and Alexander Fu Sheng martial arts movies, the major attraction is the exceptional ensemble cast. The film brings together veteran Shaw stars and the younger performers associated with Chang Cheh's late-1970s productions.
Historical Significance
The film draws on the folklore of the Ten Tigers of Canton, celebrated figures in southern Chinese martial arts traditions.
