Heaven and Hell A.K.A. Shaolin Hellgate • 第三類打鬥 (1980)

Heaven and Hell (1980) Also Known As: Shaolin Hellgate · Di San Lei Da Dou · 第三類打鬥 is a supernatural Shaw Brothers martial arts film directed by Chang Cheh. Featuring David Chiang, Alexander Fu Sheng and several Venom Mob performers, it moves beyond conventional kung fu rivalries into a story set across Heaven, Earth and the underworld.

The Story

When a heavenly figure breaks the rules of the celestial realm, the consequences send him into the human world and eventually toward the underworld. The film moves through different realms and encounters, combining martial arts conflicts with spirits, punishment and the possibility of redemption.

Rather than following a single earthly feud, the story shifts between supernatural settings and groups of fighters, culminating in battles against forces associated with Hell.

The Martial Arts & Action

Heaven and Hell uses the physical skills of Shaw Brothers action performers in a fantasy setting. Philip Kwok, Lu Feng, Chiang Sheng, Sun Chien and Lo Mang contribute to the film's martial arts appeal, with acrobatics and weapon work appearing alongside theatrical supernatural effects.

Why Collectors Pick It

Collectors interested in Chang Cheh, David Chiang and the Venom Mob will find an unusual combination of performers and genres here. Its mythological setting and shifting story structure make it a distinctive entry among Shaw Brothers fantasy kung fu DVDs.

Historical Significance

Released in 1980, Heaven and Hell illustrates the studio's willingness to mix martial arts with Chinese supernatural imagery. The film also brings together performers associated with different periods of Chang Cheh's work, making it an interesting crossover within his Shaw Brothers filmography.
