The Black Lizard (1981), also released as Hei Xi Yi (黑蜥蜴), is a Hong Kong wuxia mystery directed by Chu Yuan for Shaw Brothers Studio. The film is based on the wuxia mystery Hei Xi Yi by Huang Ying and stars Derek Yee, Helen Poon, Sun Chien, Ku Kuan-chung, Yueh Hua, Yuen Wah, and Lo Lieh. Combining swordplay, supernatural mystery, horror, and detective-style storytelling, The Black Lizard is one of Chu Yuan's distinctive Shaw Brothers productions from the early 1980s.

STORY OVERVIEW

Young swordsman Lung Fei returns home after years away and soon receives a frightening warning that his fiancée, Ting Tzu-chu, is in danger. Strange events surrounding her family quickly turn the warning into a deadly mystery involving murders, disappearances, suspicious characters, and the mysterious figure known as the Black Lizard.

With the help of Constable Tieh Hu, Lung Fei begins investigating the strange occurrences surrounding the two families. As the clues lead deeper into a web of deception and supernatural rumors, he must determine who is behind the killings and whether the terrifying legend of the Black Lizard is connected to the conspiracy.

MARTIAL ARTS HIGHLIGHTS

The Black Lizard blends Shaw Brothers swordplay with mystery and horror rather than relying on nonstop martial arts action. The film features sword fights, kung fu confrontations, assassins, unusual traps, and eerie encounters staged across elaborate period sets. Its supernatural atmosphere gives the action a darker character than many of the studio's more traditional wuxia adventures.

Chu Yuan's direction places as much emphasis on suspense and investigation as on combat, creating a wuxia mystery in which the next revelation is often as important as the next fight.

WHY COLLECTORS PICK IT

Collectors value The Black Lizard for its distinctive combination of Shaw Brothers Movies, swordplay mystery, horror, and supernatural storytelling. Derek Yee leads the film as Lung Fei, with Sun Chien, Helen Poon, Ku Kuan-chung, Yueh Hua, and Yuen Wah among the familiar faces in the supporting cast.

For collectors of Shaw Brothers Kung Fu Movies, Chu Yuan's wuxia films, and darker Hong Kong martial arts productions, The Black Lizard offers something different from the studio's more straightforward swordplay adventures.

HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE

Released in 1981, The Black Lizard came during Shaw Brothers Studio's prolific period of wuxia and martial arts filmmaking. Chu Yuan had established a strong reputation for adapting literary martial arts mysteries, and this film continues that approach by combining investigation, supernatural elements, and swordplay.

The film remains part of the Shaw Brothers catalog and is recognized as one of the studio's horror-tinged wuxia productions of the early 1980s.
