Return to the 36th Chamber (1980), also released as Return of the Master Killer and Master Killer II, was originally released as 少林搭棚大師 (Shao Lin da peng da shi). Directed by legendary filmmaker Lau Kar-leung for Shaw Brothers Studio, this martial arts comedy stars Gordon Liu (Liu Chia-hui), Kara Hui Ying-hung, Hsiao Ho, Johnny Wang Lung-wei, Wong Ching-ho, and Wa Lun. As the second film in the loosely connected 36th Chamber series, it takes Gordon Liu in a completely different direction, combining comedy, Shaolin training, traditional kung fu, and spectacular pole fighting. Available from ClassicKungFuMovies.com for collectors who value accurate film details and hard-to-find physical media.

STORY OVERVIEW

When workers at a dye factory are cheated out of their wages by a powerful owner protected by Manchu enforcers, they desperately search for someone capable of defending them. Their plan leads them to Chou Jen-che, a clever street hustler who agrees to impersonate the legendary Shaolin monk San Te in exchange for money.

The deception quickly falls apart when Chou is exposed as a fraud, leaving the workers beaten, humiliated, and even more vulnerable. Ashamed that his actions have made their situation worse, he travels to Shaolin Temple determined to learn genuine kung fu. Although he cannot simply become a disciple, Chou finds a way to observe the monks' training and gradually develops his own unusual method of fighting.

MARTIAL ARTS HIGHLIGHTS

Return to the 36th Chamber features Lau Kar-leung's inventive approach to traditional kung fu, with Gordon Liu learning through the construction and use of bamboo scaffolding rather than conventional temple training. The distinctive rooftop techniques, pole fighting, physical comedy, and demanding Shaolin-inspired sequences give the film an action style unlike its predecessor while maintaining the director's commitment to authentic martial arts choreography.

WHY COLLECTORS PICK IT

Collectors enjoy Return to the 36th Chamber because Gordon Liu plays a completely different character from the disciplined San Te he portrayed in The 36th Chamber of Shaolin. His transformation from a streetwise con artist into a capable martial artist gives the film its distinctive personality, while Kara Hui Ying-hung, Hsiao Ho, Johnny Wang Lung-wei, and the supporting cast add memorable performances. The combination of comedy, unusual training, bamboo scaffolding, and hard-hitting kung fu makes it one of Shaw Brothers Studio's most entertaining early-1980s productions.

HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE

Released in 1980, Return to the 36th Chamber followed the enormous success of The 36th Chamber of Shaolin while deliberately taking the story in a lighter direction. Gordon Liu returns to the series in a new role, while the original San Te appears as the Shaolin master who helps guide his transformation. The film became the second entry in the loosely connected 36th Chamber trilogy and remains a notable example of Lau Kar-leung's ability to combine traditional kung fu with comedy and character-driven storytelling.
