Once Upon a Time in China II (1992), also released as Wong Fei Hung II: Nam Yee Tung Chi Keung and Huang Fei Hong Zhi Er: Nan Er Dang Zi Qiang (黃飛鴻之二:男兒當自強 / 黄飞鸿之二:男儿当自强), is a Hong Kong martial arts film written, produced, and directed by Tsui Hark. Starring Jet Li, Rosamund Kwan, Donnie Yen, Max Mok, and David Chiang, the acclaimed sequel pits Wong Fei-hung against the violent White Lotus Sect while bringing him into conflict with the Qing military officer Commander Lan. Yuen Woo-ping handles the martial arts direction, including the film's celebrated final battle between Jet Li and Donnie Yen.

STORY OVERVIEW

Wong Fei-hung travels to Canton with 13th Aunt and his student Leung Foon to attend a medical conference. The city is already tense, with protests against the Qing government and the growing threat of the White Lotus Sect, a militant group attacking Westerners and Chinese people associated with foreign influence.

Wong soon becomes involved with Dr. Sun Yat-sen and revolutionary thinker Luke Ho-dong, while Commander Lan and his soldiers pursue the revolutionaries. As the White Lotus Sect creates further chaos, Wong finds himself caught between the government, the revolutionaries, and extremists determined to drive foreign influence from China.

MARTIAL ARTS HIGHLIGHTS

Once Upon a Time in China II features spectacular Hung Gar-inspired kung fu, staff fighting, weapon combat, wire-assisted action, and some of the most celebrated choreography of the 1990s. The climactic fight between Jet Li and Donnie Yen, choreographed under the direction of Yuen Woo-ping, remains one of Hong Kong cinema's most memorable martial arts battles.
