Lady Hermit (1971), Also Known As: The Lady Hermit · Zhong Kui Niang Zi · 鍾馗娘子 — Directed by Ho Meng Hua for Shaw Brothers, this classic wuxia stars Cheng Pei-pei, Shih Szu, and Lo Lieh in a story of revenge, hidden identities, swordplay, and martial arts. Cheng Pei-pei plays the legendary swordswoman known as Lady Hermit, while Shih Szu portrays a young martial artist determined to find her and become her student.
The Story
Young swordswoman Cui Ping travels in search of the legendary Lady Hermit, a highly skilled martial arts master who disappeared after being injured in a confrontation with the ruthless Black Demon. During her journey, Cui Ping arrives in a troubled village where a series of mysterious killings has created fear among the local people.
As Cui Ping investigates the strange events, she befriends Leng Yu-Shuang, a seemingly ordinary woman who is connected to the village's troubles in ways Cui does not initially understand. The Black Demon has deliberately created the crisis to draw his old enemy out of hiding, eventually forcing Lady Hermit, her students, and their allies into a dangerous final confrontation.
The Martial Arts
Lady Hermit delivers classic Shaw Brothers wuxia action built around traditional Chinese swordsmanship, fast-moving duels, martial arts combat, and dramatic confrontations. Cheng Pei-pei brings the graceful but powerful screen presence that made her one of the defining female martial arts stars of the era, while Shih Szu provides the younger warrior whose search for a master drives much of the story.
