Collection: Shaw Brothers Movies
Few studios had a greater impact on martial arts cinema than Shaw Brothers Studio. For more than three decades, Shaw Brothers produced hundreds of films that helped shape Hong Kong cinema, from classic kung fu and wuxia to historical adventures, horror, crime films, and drama. The studio became famous for its larger-than-life heroes, memorable villains, talented martial artists, and fight scenes that remain a major part of Hong Kong film history.
Founded by the Shaw family, the studio built its reputation through large-scale productions, elaborate sets, detailed costumes, and a permanent film studio in Hong Kong. While Shaw Brothers made films across many genres, its martial arts movies became its signature. The studio's kung fu and wuxia films introduced audiences to stars and filmmakers who would go on to define an important period of Hong Kong action cinema.
THE STUDIO THAT DEFINED AN ERA
During the 1960s and 1970s, Shaw Brothers worked with some of the most important directors in Hong Kong martial arts cinema. Chang Cheh became known for hard-hitting action, brotherhood, revenge stories, and memorable heroes. Lau Kar-leung brought his family's martial arts background to the screen, emphasizing traditional kung fu techniques and carefully staged fight choreography. Chor Yuen became one of the leading names in wuxia, creating stylish swordplay films filled with mystery, rivalries, and larger-than-life characters.
Directors including Sun Chung, Ho Meng-hua, and Lo Wei also contributed to the studio's extensive catalog. Together, these filmmakers helped make Shaw Brothers one of the defining names in classic Hong Kong martial arts movies.
THE FACES OF SHAW BROTHERS
Shaw Brothers was home to many of the actors who became synonymous with classic kung fu and Hong Kong martial arts films. Gordon Liu became closely associated with Shaolin kung fu through films such as The 36th Chamber of Shaolin. Ti Lung and David Chiang became one of the studio's best-known screen partnerships, while Alexander Fu Sheng became one of Shaw Brothers' most popular young stars.
The studio's roster also included Lo Lieh, Kara Hui, Lily Li, Chen Kuan Tai, Jimmy Wang Yu, and the Five Venoms. Each brought a different style and screen presence to Shaw Brothers productions, helping create the characters and fight sequences that longtime martial arts movie fans still remember today.
MORE THAN KUNG FU
Shaw Brothers was much more than a kung fu studio. Its catalog covers wuxia swordplay, historical adventures, revenge films, supernatural stories, crime thrillers, horror, drama, and adaptations of classic Chinese literature.
That variety is one of the reasons Shaw Brothers remains such an important part of Hong Kong film history. The studio could move from traditional Shaolin kung fu to swordplay, crime, horror, or period drama while maintaining the distinctive production style that made its movies recognizable.
THE SHAW BROTHERS LEGACY
Many Shaw Brothers movies remain popular with collectors and longtime fans decades after their original theatrical releases. Titles featuring Gordon Liu, Ti Lung, David Chiang, Alexander Fu Sheng, Chen Kuan Tai, Jimmy Wang Yu, and the Five Venoms continue to attract audiences interested in classic Hong Kong martial arts cinema.
For collectors, original and classic Shaw Brothers DVDs also provide a physical connection to an important period of Hong Kong filmmaking. This collection brings together Shaw Brothers kung fu movies, wuxia films, martial arts classics, and other titles from the studio's extensive catalog.
